Ultrasound

We now have state-of-the-art Ultrasound equipment at Boston Road Animal Clinic. That service is available on site in our hospital, and can be scheduled on an as-needed basis. Ultrasounds are performed by Dr Peter Kintzer, Dr. Toomey or Dr. Stone, all of whom are board certified internal medicine specialists.

Abdominal Ultrasound
Abdominal ultrasounds allow the doctor to fully examine the liver, gallbladder, spleen, adrenal glands, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, stomach, and intestines. An ultrasound exam is optimal when diagnosing depends on seeing inside the organ. Ultrasounds are completely painless and sometimes can be done without sedation. When abnormalities are found a "fine needle aspirate" can be performed to obtain samples to help determine whether or not surgery or treatment may be required.
Cardiac Ultrasound
The heart is a very complex organ. It has four valves,an electrical conduction system, and four chambers, all of which are critical in the heart's everyday function. Like us, our pets suffer from congenital and acquired heart diseases. In order to properly diagnose and treat heart disease the doctor needs to see the heart in motion and measure its structures from the inside. Because of this "real life" view the doctor can treat and monitor a patient more accurately. Over the course of treatment, with an ultrasound, the doctor can visually see the response to the medications prescribed.
